Experience of Social Discrimination in Leisure Activities of Persons with Mental Disabilities Compared with Persons with Physical Disabilities

Abstract
Purpose: To compare experiences of social discrimination in leisure activities between persons with mentaldisabilities and those with physical disabilities.

Methods: This study analyzed data of the National Survey of Peoplewith Disabilities in 2020. Data from 311 persons with mental disabilities and 2,488 persons with physical disabilitieswere subjected to frequency analysis, x2test, and hierarchical logistic regression.

Results: In model 1, the experienceof social discrimination in leisure activities was higher for persons with mental disabilities than for persons withphysical disabilities (OR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.14~1.88). In model 2, the experience of social discrimination in leisureactivities was higher for persons with mental disabilities than for persons with physical disabilities (OR: 1.31, 95%CI: 1.00~1.72). In model 3 and model 4, there was no significant difference in the experience of social discriminationin leisure activities between the two groups (OR: 1.22, 95% CI: 0.92~1.61 in model 3; OR: 1.25, 95% CI: 0.94~1.66in model 4).

Conclusion: It was found that average monthly household income, residence area, and communitymedical staff's understanding of disability had more impact on the experience of social discrimination in leisureactivities of persons with mental disabilities.
